桂林 / 1–2 days
Guilin is the practical gateway to Guangxi's karst country, with riverside city walks, limestone caves, and easy onward connections into Yangshuo's rural landscape.
At a glance
Treat Guilin and Yangshuo as one region: use Guilin for arrival and one city or cave stop, then spend at least two nights near Yangshuo for river and countryside time. Do not schedule every scenic transfer before checking river and weather conditions.
The non-negotiables
Choose a cruise, ferry segment, or Xingping-based view that fits the season and transfer plan. Confirm the current boarding point and return transport rather than assuming every river product follows the same route.
Cycle, walk, or use a local car through villages and fields at a pace that allows stops. In heat or rain, shorten the route and avoid unsafe riding.
Select a viewpoint with access suitable for your fitness and the weather. Wet stone and low cloud can make a famous climb poor value.
Keep transfers under control
Day 1 — Arrive Guilin and make one compact city or cave visit.
Day 2 — Transfer through the Li River landscape to Yangshuo.
Day 3 — Yulong countryside; use Day 4 for Xingping or a slower village route.

Small choices, better days
01Treat Guilin and Yangshuo as one linked region.
02Confirm river conditions before committing to a cruise format.
Terminals and bases
Guilin has an airport and multiple rail stations; Yangshuo rail station is not in central Yangshuo. Confirm the station and onward vehicle. A split stay is useful only if it saves a difficult arrival or departure.
After the sights
Start with Guilin rice noodles and add beer fish, stuffed vegetables, and seasonal produce in Yangshuo. West Street is convenient but noisy; lodging and dinner just outside the core can feel more local.
Protect the trip
Heavy rain can disrupt river products and make cycling unsafe. Use Reed Flute Cave, a cooking class, a covered market, or a short village drive, and move panoramic outings to the clearest remaining period.
